Sometimes the simplest ideas are the best! A DirtBag is simply a Biodegradable jute bag, filled with rich soil-less growing media and site-specific native seed.
Dirtbags provide immediate temporary erosion control with the jute fabric, ultimately the goal is for the growing medium to support the establishment of health vegetation - Healthy vegetation is the best form of erosion control and bank stabilization. DirtBags are an Ideal solution for supporting establishment of vegetation in riparian zones, storm ponds and step slopes.
Installation
• Installation is easy, efficient and requires no machinery on site. Because all the components are contained within the DirtBags. • DirtBags weigh ~9kg and are easily placed by hand • Dirtbags can be installed in an edge to edge directly on the ground, they can also be used in a stacked or tiered approach. – DirtBags are not to be used to create structural walls. • If desired larger format live plants can be planted between bags and small plugs can be inserted into bags by making a small whole no larger than 5cm • If installing in steep areas or areas susceptible to erosion we recommend using 20-30cm hardwood bioengineering stakes to secure bags in place.
ESTABLISHMENT
• For quicker establishment of vegetation provide irrigation. If supplemental water is not provided, the seed will germinate when the environment provides optimal conditions for germination. • Under typical conditions DirtBags will fullyBiodegrade within 3 years.
RECCOMENDED USES
• Building up areas of deep scour or erosion, which provides the structure and soil required to support the re-establishment of vegetation. • Hard to vegetate riparian areas where erosion has removed topsoil horizon and site soils are unlikely to support vegetation. • Areas that are subjected to peak flows and water scour. • DirtBags have proved to be an excellent companion to live stake installations, stakes can be driven trough the bags and into site soils.
FORMAT
* DirtBags are 28cm x 51cm x 7.5cm 0.14m2 each bags to cover 1 square metre) • Each DirtBag comes filled with 11 litres of soil-less growing media and weighs approximately 9kg. • 3-4 grams of seed is blended into growing media in each DirtBag. Bags can come with or without seed. • DirtBags are made from 100% Jute fibre burlap and the sewn bag closure is made with a fully biodegradable cotton thread. • DirtBags are shipped palatalized on a 48”X48” pallet (75 per pallet) • Seeded bags have a shelf life of 10 days to preserve seed viability and ensure successful germination.
