OVERVIEW
In a healthy ecosystem streams and riverbanks are characterized by thick stands of woody shrubs and trees, sadly many riverbanks lack healthy and vigorous vegetation, this lack of vegetation leads to many unfavourable outcomes for the waterways including erosion, loss of habitat and decreased resiliency to fluctuating water levels. Many efforts are being made to restore healthy function to our waterways and Willow (Salix) species form the backbone of restoring bank stability in riparian areas. We have established Willow mother-beds at our Strathmore, Alberta Nursery, these beds are home to thousands of locally collected native Willows. Our stock was sourced from the Bow, Red Deer and Oldman River watersheds.
PROCUREMENT INFORMATION
Live stakes can be harvested in either the spring or fall while plants are dormant
• We can harvest material directly from our motherbed or wild collect when the required species or specification calls for it
• Confirm your order as early as possible to hold motherbed inventory
Formats
• Live stakes can be harvested in various lengths and
diameters, depending on project requirements
• Live stakes are packaged in bundles of 20-50
depending on stake size
INSTALLATION GUIDELINES
• Once willows are harvested, it’s important to keep them cool & moist until planting. Keep them out of the sun and either soak them or spray them with water to keep them moist
• For best results soak willows in water for at least 48hours and up to 2 weeks before installation
• Willows harvested in the fall can be overwintered for spring planting as long as they are kept fully covered in a snow pile
• Take care to ensure stakes are planted with the top of the stake outside of the soil• Ensure willows are planted deep enough to have access to ground water if not being installed in an irrigated site
• Ensure that no more than 20% of the stake remains above the soil to prevent desiccation
Establishment Overview
• Success rates increase with irrigation
• For non-irrigated sites, planting deep enough to ensure willows have access to ground water will improve success
• You may see some leaf growth on stakes in the first season, but others may establish roots without the appearance of much vegetation above ground
• A gentle tug in the fall after a spring planting can be helpful in determining establishment
• If no growth is noticed after 2-3 growing seasons, replace dead live stakes with new material
